The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
